IPOH: PAS said Friday it will back Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Permatang Pauh by-election but refused to say if it will endorse him to be prime minister if Pakatan Rakyat comes to power.
The remark indicates that Anwar faces big hurdles in his goal to take the top job despite stitching together a formidable alliance to produce spectacular gains during the March 8 general election.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said at the party’s muktamar here they “will give full support” to Anwar during the by-election campaign. [more]

Before March 8th many did not believe change was possible. We talked to Malaysians who were cynical and sarcastic. They were frustrated with corruption and cronyism and a sluggish economy that meant fewer jobs and lower incomes. They were tired of race-based politics and discrimination.
That was before March 8th.
Now we see Malaysians throughout the country and around the world are hopeful. They believe that our nation can be more peaceful and more prosperous. They believe Malaysians can co-exist together in harmony. It won’t be easy but March 8th proved that the impossible is in fact possible.
August 27th is only 12 days away. That will be the day Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim returns to Parliament to represent Peramatang Pauh, the seat he held for 17 years.
Between now and then, every Malaysian can play a part in making that historic day a reality.
Travel to Penang to show your support for Anwar Ibrahim in the August 26th by-election. Volunteer to help distribute campaign materials and visit the voters in Permatang Pauh to explain why you believe in Anwar Ibrahim’s vision for change and reform. If you can’t make the trip, then make some phone calls to family and friends to make a trip on your behalf.
And of course – we need your financial support.
The government will spend tens of millions in their campaign to defame and harass Anwar Ibrahim and his supporters in Penang. UMNO will print hundreds of thousands of posters, flyers and banners. They will send thousands of people on busses from around the country to Penang – some of them may even vote illegally. They will book all the hotels in the state to make it difficult for our volunteers and supporters to assist.
They will do anything they can to stop Anwar Ibrahim.
We don’t need hundreds of millions to win. We proved that on March 8th. But we do need your support to keep producing campaign materials and supporting our volunteers on the ground.
Please make a confidential online contribution today.

Forward this email to everyone you know and ask them to do the same. Every Ringgit produces another 10 campaign flyers. Every 100 Ringgit produces 2 banners. A donation of 1000 means we can add another 12 foot billboard in Penang. Let’s work together to bring a new dawn to Malaysia.
Thank you for your support.

IPOH: The Pas leadership came under attack yesterday for putting Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and its Pakatan Rakyat partners above the party’s own interests.
Several delegates at the 238-member Pas youth assembly did not mince their words when they blamed the party leadership for paying too much attention to Anwar and his political agenda.
They accused party leaders of championing Anwar’s cause for political mileage and to boost their own popularity with the masses.
Terengganu delegate Wan Khairy Wan Abdullah set the ball rolling when he questioned why Pas leaders were obsessed with Anwar.
He then delivered a short history lesson, reminding party members that it was Pas which had been supportive of his activist agenda before his entry into politics.
“But what did he do in the end? He dumped us and joined Umno,” he said to restless murmurings from the floor.
He said despite this, party leaders obviously had not learnt their lesson. Wan Khairy said Pas now had to take a backseat when it came to ties within Pakatan Rakyat. [more]

PUTRAJAYA: Lawyers of PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is charged with sodomy should be provided with a copy of the police report lodged by his accuser, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar.
He said Anwar’s lawyers would need to read the police report by Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan to prepare their defence in the trial.
“Under the law, he (Anwar) is entitled to the police report to prepare for his defence. By right it should be given to him,” he said, adding that it was the right thing to do, as there was already a charge preferred against Anwar.
He added that it was not necessary to give copies of the investigation papers to his lawyers.

KUALA LUMPUR – A MALAYSIAN high court has ordered a prominent political blogger to reveal his sources used in articles that alleged sodomy accusations against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim were fabricated, a lawyer said on Thursday.
Online commentator Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin had in three articles posted on his blog implied that lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah was behind the sodomy accusations by Mr Anwar’s 23-year-old aide.
Mr Muhammad Shafee told The Associated Press he obtained the court order on Wednesday against Mr Raja Petra, ordering him to reveal the sources of the three articles published this month, and the identities of those who commented on them.
The court also ordered him to remove the articles and all comments within two days and refrain from publishing similar allegations, Mr Muhammad Shafee said.
‘This man, he’s been talking absolutely rubbish. He makes up stories’, Mr Muhammad Shafee said.
In the articles, Mr Raja Petra alleged Mr Muhammad Shafee helped engineer the sodomy accusations against Anwar for his own gain. [more]

HE MIGHT not carry the firebrand reputation of his predecessor Rafidah Aziz.
But Malaysia’s new Minister for International Trade and Industry Muhyiddin Yassin — who until recently, had been widely speculated to make a bid for the post of Umno’s president or deputy president — did not need much prompting to criticise his government’s chief nemesis Anwar Ibrahim as a “self-glorified” spin-doctor on “an agenda to put Malaysia in the doldrums”.
“We are now dealing with the serious issue of managing our economy … we are running this job seriously. Of course, there are people who couldn’t care so much. Anwar Ibrahim is one particular person.”
Mr Muhyiddin was speaking at a press conference held yesterday after the annual seminar here to promote business opportunities in Malaysia. He had been asked to what extent Mr Anwar’s publicised bid to topple the government has given investors the jitters.
Describing Mr Anwar’s plans to become the next Prime Minister as “an obsession”, the minister added: ”That is his business. While that is so, our immediate interest is to protect the safety of our people.” [more]

Hypocrite-Watcher: Have we heard well? Is this report correct – Shahrizat declares jihad against Anwar Ibrahim? This is playing with religion in a serious way. Islam is being truly corrupted by Umno people.
Does an ultra-liberal minister, whose personal lifestyle we should not expose here, have any idea what she is saying? I guess not. I guess she has never read any serious Islamic material.
For if she had, she would have realised that her action is the last thing a Muslim should do. I bet Shahrizat does not even understand the concept of jihad, otherwise she would never dare say something like this.
Is it that she cannot admit her humiliating defeat to a political novice in her ‘own’ constituency, and now she is jumping on a jihad bandwagon against her victor’s father?
My advice to Shahrizat – keep quiet, otherwise your family lifestyle may come into the open. Then we shall know the true hypocrite. [more]
