BUTTERWORTH: A large crowd gathered at Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Youth wing operations centre in Taman Sama Gagah to welcome Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his maiden appearance since he announced his candidacy for the Permatang Pauh by-election.
Prancing golden lions, accompanied by Chinese drums greeted Anwar and his wife Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail when they arrived there at 8.50pm.
Shouts of reformasi momentarily filled the air and the cheering crowd quickly turned quiet to listen to his message.
“I sincerely say kam siah (thank you) to all Permatang Pauh voters for supporting me from 1982 up till now. You later supported my wife from the 1999 general election and helped her win with a bigger majority in the general election in March.
“I appeal for your continued support to enable me to enter Parliament. If all goes well, hopefully, it will be this month,” he said in his 20-minute speech.
Earlier, Wan Azizah also thanked the voters for supporting her in the last 10 years as former Permatang Pauh MP.
She noted that it was time to move on for the good of the people’s future.
“I am vacating my seat not for personal interests, but for our common struggle to create history in Permatang Pauh, for Anwar to lead the nation,” she said in her speech. [more]
