The fight for Permatang Pauh goes on, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is determined to capture the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat despite being charged in court for committing an unnatural sexual act.

Anwar said he and his party would like to concentrate on winning the Permatang Pauh seat and would go ahead with the meet-the-people session at the PAS office in Taman Medan, off Old Klang Road at 8pm Thursday.

“Isyallah we will take over the government and correct the slander and corruption,” he said, adding that the court case was an attempt to blemish his character.

He said one should not underestimate the wisdom of Malays.

“I have seen the Merdeka Centre polls released last night. The Malay constituents’ votes are very, very assuring,” he said.

Anwar added that he appreciated the stand made by his lawyers, the judge and the prosecution but was disappointed that the charge still proceeded because he believed that the prosecutors were forced by politicians to carry out the charge.

“Before this, I was reported in the media that there was assault, and then on Wednesday, the Prime Minister came up with a statement that was most insulting and said that there was rape but today the charge is 377b of the Penal Code,” he said.

“If it is “suka sama suka” (consensual), why was I the only one being charged? If it is consensual, both should be charged,” he said after coming out of the courtroom in Jalan Duta. [more]
