Permatang Pauh: Anwar accuses Umno of using race

SEBERANG PERAI (Aug 21, 2008): Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has accused Umno of using a race to “fool” the Malays in the run-up to the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election.

Pointing to BN leaflets being circulated door-to-door that depicted him as being pro-Chinese, he said: “What is sad is that what I say about my concerns for Malays is being deleted.”

He noted, for example, that reports of his assertion that he was for “ketuanan rakyat” (people supremacy), that included Malays, Chinese and Indians, were manipulated such that his comments on the Malays went missing, leaving people to perceive he was favouring the non-Malays.

“They are using a racist agenda to fool the Malays. I am a Malay and I feel sad when my people are being fooled like this,” he told reporters after a campaign walkabout at the Penanti market. [more]

Flyers on Anwar’s ‘Cabinet’ surface

FLYERS listing names of a “new” Cabinet complete with the “Jemaah Menteri Malaysia 2008” headline and emblem are mysteriously circulating in Parliament.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was named Prime Minister with Lim Kit Siang (DAP – Ipoh Timur) as Deputy Prime Minister/Internal Security Minister and R. Sivarasa (PKR – Subang) as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of law and judiciary.

Sabah Progressive Party president Datuk Yong Teck Lee was also named Deputy Prime Minister from Sabah/Sarawak.

No one has claimed responsibility and MPs are pointing fingers at each other. Sivarasa said the list was a cheap Umno propaganda. [more]

Malaysia’s Anwar accuses govt of ‘dirty tricks’ in by-election

PENANG, Malaysia (AFP) — Malaysia’s opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday accused the government of using “dirty tricks” to disrupt his campaign to return to parliament in a by-election.

Anwar said the government had ordered its supporters to heckle him over allegations he sodomised a young male aide, which he has dismissed as a plot to derail his ambitions of seizing power.

And he said the ruling coalition was playing on tensions between Malaysia’s majority Malays and minority ethnic Chinese and Indians, by sending SMS text messages to Malay villagers slamming Anwar as an “agent of the Chinese”.

“These are dirty tactics. It is a malicious campaign on their part and is completely immoral,” he told a press conference.

“Look at our campaign slogan, it is “Reform” and “Independence”. But their leaders, led by (Deputy Premier) Najib Razak, asked them to shout ‘sodomy’ to our camp of supporters,” he said. [more]
