UK Financial Times Transcript: Anwar Ibrahim Interview

Published: July 31 2008 17:51 | Last updated: July 31 2008 17:51

The FT’s Assif Shameen spoke to Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s opposition leader, about the sodomy charges that he faces and his intent to return to politics. The following is an edited transcript of the interview.

Financial Times: There are reports that you will be arrested and charged imminently. Clearly, you don’t think they have a case?

Anwar Ibrahim: First of all, with all the evidence that is now before them, I don’t see any reason why the authorities should continue with these investigations of alleged sodomy. There is this medical report, which is authentic, very clear. A doctor who examined the accuser clearly ruled out any alleged sodomy.

In any other system where there is justice and fairness, the powers would have by now shut down the investigations and cleared my name. But here in Malaysia, in our so-called police state, it is the intent of the officials, particularly the Inspector General of Police, Musa Hassan, which seems to matter most. This is the same man who was involved in my case in 1998 when I was blind folded and brutally assaulted. I have filed a complaint against him citing his involvement. But instead of addressing pressing economic problems like soaring inflation, the government is trying to divert public attention with this filthy sodomy charade.

Financial Times: The government says it must proceed with the sodomy complaint in accordance with law. If you are innocent, as you say, why not just cooperate with investigators?

Anwar Ibrahim: I am cooperating and I have cooperated. Even though I was never shown a copy of the complaint filed by the accuser or officially told exactly what I am being accused of, I have cooperated with the police and tried to answer all their questions. You have probably heard the reports of how they came to arrest me, how I was forced to strip at a government and how I was forced to stay in a cell overnight. All this was staged to humiliate me. On my part, I have provided them fool-proof evidence, alibi. There are no grounds whatsoever for them to proceed any further.

On the other hand, there is compelling evidence of a deliberate and persistent attempt to incriminate me. Why else would they not show me a copy of my accuser’s complaint after six weeks? Why else do they insist on my DNA or blood samples after they have seen a medical report that clearly says that the accuser was never sodomised? Because they want to fabricate evidence. This is what they did in 1998. Just look at their track record. The players are same, the police chief, the attorney general. Same people using same tricks.

Financial Times: Why do you think the authorities are doing this to you?

Anwar Ibrahim: Because they are terrified. Because their corrupt system is crumbling. You see, these are desperate people. [more]

Anwar: Drop the Case

The Star on line

PETALING JAYA: PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claimed that the medical report leaked on Monday confirmed that the sodomy allegations against him were baseless and were politically-motivated.

He urged the police to stop their investigation and to send the medical report to the Attorney-General’s Chambers and classify the case under “no further action.”

The medical report from Hospital Pusrawi, signed by Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid at 2.14pm on June 28, was leaked on the Internet on Monday.

The report said that there was no medical indication that Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, Anwar’s 23-year-old former aide, had been sodomised.

In the report, Dr Mohamed Osman had also recommended that Mohd Saiful go to a government hospital for further check-up.

In KUALA LUMPUR, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said that the case won’t be dropped based just on the medical report.

“This is just one aspect of the investigation. The police are piecing together evidence, let them do their job and complete their investigation,” he said.

“As it is, they haven’t charged Anwar with anything yet,” he noted.

Raja Petra Kamaruddin, editor of news portal Malaysia Today which first carried the medical report, also claimed that Dr Mohamed Osman had gone into hiding because the police wanted him to change his medical report to implicate Anwar.

The police have denied that allegation. [more]

The Case Against Anwar–Review and Outlook from Wall Street Journal Asia

July 29, 2008

It’s been a month since an aide to Anwar Ibrahim accused the Malaysian opposition leader of sodomy, yet no formal charge has been filed nor has Mr. Anwar been allowed to see the police report filed against him. Now, the case against Mr. Anwar looks shakier still.

Yesterday, Mr. Anwar’s supporters pointed to an independent political blog, MalaysiaToday, which posted a two-page medical report it said was written by a doctor who examined Saiful Bukhari Azlan on June 28, the day the aide went to the police with his complaint. The alleged report is written in shorthand and signed by Dr. Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid. It says that a rectal examination showed no active bleeding, tears or injury.

The hospital yesterday confirmed that Dr. Mohamed is on staff, but wouldn’t comment on the report. MalaysiaToday’s editor, Raja Petra Kamarudin, confirmed to us by telephone that he has seen the original report. Dr. Mohamed hasn’t been seen since the post on MalaysiaToday. A spokesman for the Prime Minister’s office declined comment to us. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police told the New Straits Times that investigations were continuing.

This great wall of silence raises many questions. If it’s true that Mr. Anwar’s aide didn’t present any physical signs of injury at the hospital, then on what basis was the police report filed? If the aide went to a government hospital to get a second opinion — as required under the law in sodomy cases, and as the first doctor suggested — what did that second doctor see? And why is the accuser, Mr. Saiful, still formally under police protection?

This has hallmarks of a case being built after, not before, the purported “crime.” [more]

Leaked medical report stirs controversy for Anwar, police

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters said today a leaked medical report that states his accuser was not sodomised, backs his claim of innocence but police have dismissed the report as sabotage and meant to confuse the public.

Anwar himself has not commented on the medical report exposed by Malaysia Today’s editor Raja Petra Kamarudin, who claimed that Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid from Hospital Pusrawi found no signs that Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan had any injuries consistent with sodomy in a June 28 medical report hours before the male aide complained of sexual assault.

But Anwar’s wife, Parliamentary Opposition leader Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail joined party supporters to say the medical report proved there was a conspiracy against him, similar to his followers’ claim of a conspiracy a decade ago that cost Anwar a chance to be prime minister.

PKR secretary-general Salehuddin Hashim said the leaked medical report confirm the party’s stand that the allegations against their de facto party chief are “without merit and politically motivated”. He added that it further erodes public confidence in the police investigations into this case.
“Why has this medical report surfaced only today, over one month after the allegations were made, after Anwar spent a night in jail, and after the police have spent so much time and money on this case?” Salehuddin asked in a press statement issued this evening.

“There should be a complete disclosure of the “facts” of this case to the public. Anything less will further diminish the public’s trust in the institutions of governance and in particular, the integrity of the office of the Inspector-General of Police,” he added.

He also noted the reports that Dr Mohamed Osman had been interrogated by the police for three days and that, as a result, the doctor and his family have since gone into hiding. “Every assurance must be given for his safety and protection,” Salehuddin said.

Wan Azizah told the Malaysiakini news portal that police should investigate the attempt to defame her husband instead of continuing investigations into the sodomy allegation.

“It’s a confirmation that it’s a conspiracy all along as this report goes to prove Anwar’s innocence,” said the PKR president.

Anwar’s lawyer Sankara Nair told The Malaysian Insider that the legal team will discuss the latest developments while Hospital Pusrawi is keeping silent on the matter. According to the medical report from the hospital, Dr Mohamed Osman had told Saiful to go to a government hospital for a second opinion.

PKR released the medical report to the media after it first appeared in the Malaysia Today news portal. [more]

According to Raja Petra Kamarudin
Dr Mohamed Osman examined Saiful but found no evidence that he had been sodomised, either by Anwar Ibrahim or anyone else for that matter. The doctor’s report (which can be viewed below) says that there is zero (0) skin tearing, zero (0) active bleeding, zero (0) traces of pus, etc., which basically means he can’t be suffering from a pain in the anus as what he alleges. The doctor’s diagnosis is that he rules out or TRO (to rule out) assault (sodomised). In short: Mohd Saiful Bukhari Bin Azlan is not suffering any pain in the anus and neither was he assaulted or sodomised in the anus.Saiful then said he would like to make a police report so Dr Mohamed Osman suggested he go for a second medical examination at a government hospital. Saiful did so and the doctor at the government hospital also came out with the same diagnosis. Nevertheless, Saiful still made his police report at the pondok police in the hospital.

Wall Street Journal Editorial: Nasty in Kuala Lumpur

REVIEW & OUTLOOK
July 19, 2008; Page A8

The last time Malaysian democrat Anwar Ibrahim was prosecuted on a trumped-up sodomy charge, we wrote that the government’s “crude measures will exact a heavy price in terms of lost credibility.” Ten years later, Malaysia’s political leaders are repeating their mistakes.

On Wednesday, Mr. Anwar was picked up by men in ski masks and hauled to police headquarters. He was interrogated for six hours, stripped and asked to supply a DNA sample — a request he refused. He spent the night on a concrete floor without furniture and was released on bail Thursday morning. Malaysian media report that the government is exploring ways to compel Mr. Anwar to give DNA.
Mr. Anwar’s accuser — his former aide, Saiful Bukhari Azlan — is under police protection. It’s not a stretch to imagine Mr. Anwar’s DNA finding its way onto his clothes as “evidence,” as that’s the tactic the police used back in 1998. Mr. Anwar wryly noted at a press conference that, while he was stripped, the police measured his “necessary parts.” That kind of detail would be helpful in a show trial. [more]

Anwar Ibrahim Talks About His Medical “Examination”

Saiful ready to swear he was sodomised by Anwar: Dad

KUALA LUMPUR – MR Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan is prepared to swear before an ulama that he had been sodomised by Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, said his father.
Mr Azlan Mohd Lazim, however, said this would only be done after police had concluded their investigations, the New Straits Times reported on Tuesday.

“My son is ready and willing to swear in a mosque that he was sodomised, as reported to the police,” Mr Azlan said in a statement read out by Mr Saiful’s lawyer, Mr Zamri Idrus at a press conference on Monday.

“My son has shown courage because the truth is on his side. He has given full cooperation in assisting the police in the investigation without hesitation, unlike his former employer who is full of excuses.”

Also present was Mr Saiful’s uncle, known only as Uncle Pat.

Home minister interfering in sodomy probe: Anwar Ibrahim

Kuala Lumpur, July 19 (IANS) Malaysia’s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has charged Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar with interference in the probe into the sodomy charge against Ibrahim levelled by an aide. He alleged it was at the behest of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Friday denied that anyone in his government was hatching any conspiracy against Ibrahim.

The probe would be allowed to be conducted unhindered, media reports Saturday quoted him as saying.

“It is to smear the credibility and reputation of our client. Syed Hamid should know better than to attempt to exert his influence on this matter, especially as he is a senior minister,” Ibrahim’s lawyer and political colleague R. Sivarasa said in a statement he issued at Ibrahim’s house Friday.

On the other hand, the prime minister Friday challenged Ibrahim to immediately disprove the sodomy allegation against him by submitting to DNA tests.
